for his 30 years as a justice. in california, president obama paid tribute to scalia as a supreme court giant but also made it clear he's ready to fight to replace him. >> i intend to nominate somebody to present them to the american people, to present them to the senate. i expect them to hold hearings. i expect there to be a vote. >> reporter: but republicans remain dug in, insisting the next president should name scalia's replacement. the president pointed out there is precentor the senate confirming a justice during a president's final year in office. president reagan's nominee, anthony kennedy, was confirmed in february 1988. but kennedy's case is an unusual one. the vacancy came the previous year, in july 1987, when justice lewis powell resigned. reagan first nominated robert bork, who the senate rejected after a long, bitter debate. reagan then nominated the less controversial kennedy in november 1987. the senate confirmed him three months later, 97-0.

and jeb bush. >> on the democratic side, an hillary clinton has a big lead over bernie sanders in south carolina. it's a much closer races in in nevada. she met with black leaders in new york city and vowed to protect economic oppores and voting rights of african-americans. sanders has also made a similar appeal. he attended a prayer breakfast with african-american ministers in south carolina and met with the daughter of police chokehold victim aaron garner. sanders later traveled to atlanta where he spoke to thousands of young voters many from historically black colleges. another set back for bill cosby. a suburban philadelphia judge won't dismiss the charges against the comedian sing he sees no evidence of a deal more than a decade ago to prevent criminal prosecution. that palestinians for now, the case can proceed with a preliminary hearing in three weeks. the 78-year-old tv star faces ten years in prison if convicted.
